If there is one place in the world where mostly Asians love to shop, it is most certainly Dubai. Paris, New York are of course, the ultimate choices, but in terms of value for money, shopping in Dubai is preferred. From Fashion to Food, from Wines to Automobiles, from Jewellery to Luxury, from Chocolates to Watches, Dubai has it all. I have not come across travelers who go to Dubai for Electronics or Mobiles, but usually for Fashion Apparels. No wonder Dubai offers – the Dubai Mall and the Mall of Emirates. Whether you are on a business trip or a Dubai holiday travel package, shopping is a must stop at the destination well recognized as the “Shoppers Delight”.
MALL OF EMIRATES
One can touch, feel, smell brands, brands and more brands, as soon as one touches down at the Dubai International Airport, (ideally at the Emirates Terminals). Even the most luxurious of all cars can be bought at the airport. On my last visit to the Dubai Shopping Festival, six of the world’s favorite auto models were on display and sale at the Dubai International Airport, with a raffle prize coupon for a mega draw, which was surprisingly another luxury car of the same brand. The queues that you experience at the Chocolate duty free outlets and the liquor outlets is mind-boggling.
BURJ KHALIFA IMAGE
Now with the Dubai Shopping Festival around the corner this January, it’s time for shoppers to pack their bags and go on a shopping spree, with a holiday package tour of Dubai. This is the best time of the year for Dubai, the weather is at its best and one can really enjoy the evening Desert Safari, followed by Dinner on Sand Dunes, along with a belly dancing show. Also the Marina Cruise (or the not-so-great Dhow Cruise) is a pleasant experience. The city is well-lit, the tallest building – Burj Khalifa – is a great site to visit, the Atlantis is quite packed, the new year activity are quite visible, global food and cuisines are available in shopping malls and restaurants and celebrations are in the air. Tourists from all over the world visit on a Dubai holiday package, specially to see the new year fireworks at the Burj Khalifa towers.
The paradigm shift is so evident. There was a time when Indian families would visit Chennai (earlier Madras) for shopping, especially for weddings. At that time, Nalli Silks was most popular (even now) for wedding collections. It was a rare luxury, when people would travel by the first flight on the morning to Chennai and return late evening with bags full. Times have changed since then. Post the opening up of the aviation sector and with LCC (low cost carriers), guests have shifted to shop in Dubai.
If you are shopping in the Mall of Emirates, enjoy the largest collection of marine-life, as you enter. The Chocolate factory too is another worth visiting destination in the mall. Whether you are at the Dubai Mall or Mall of Emirates, one day is just not enough. The Gold Souk is also another worthwhile shopping destination in the city, if jewellery is on your mind. The glitterati and usage of gold colour all along the street is so much on the face, the neon signs, the shine of the ornaments on display is overpowering.
